Receipts accumulate in bags because you might need them someday. When a new appliance fails, the useful one is difficult to find among a month of groceries.
Choose a storage place for purchases that have a return period, warranty or another reason to keep proof. Record the item, shop and purchase date in a filename or note. Preserve the original where the retailer requires it, and check that a digital copy is readable.
Separate temporary from ongoing
A receipt for something you may return can stay with a reminder to decide before the relevant deadline. Records for durable items may belong with the product information. Everyday receipts you no longer need can be removed according to your own record-keeping requirements.
Before building a large filing system, organise one purchase you are likely to ask about later. Find its receipt, note the return instructions and put the record where you would naturally look. Avoid placing payment details in a publicly shared folder. The useful test is whether you can retrieve the proof when a question arises.
